What sculptors do with stone & painters do with brushes, numerous award winner Philander Begay actually does the same, but with him,it's in metal form.
A 'master' carver in tufa stone,he gives it to us straight, with nothing being left out,by bringing us right to the ceremony & giving us an accurate depiction of the Kachina without leaving any of the detailing out!! You are ensured having the exact & full attire, with every single detail as if your standing right in front of the Kachina! You literally have to be a artist to be able to draw this into the Tufa stone & Philander validates that it's not a skill he lacks in!This bolo tie is the Hopi "Mudhead Kachina" who is similar to the "Pueblo Clown" & are there at the ceremonies for laughter.
Made of sterling with 18K gold accents, the 4" tall Kachina hangs from a 8 ply brown leather braided comfort strap(Which is much easier on the neck)& has a dual finished body, with parts of him are blackened, while the rest of him is lightly oxidized. This dual finishing helps to accentuate each part.
The Mudhead is bare chested, while only wearing the darkened skirt & his darkened detailed moccasins & has ties around his wrists & calf's.. A bandanna style scarf is tied around his neck, while he holds the drum in his hand, the 18K gold rattle in the other. If you zoom in on the full body photos, you will even see the finger separation & how he made them to wrap around the drum & rattle! (BTW,check out the drum’s detail that Philander built by hand!) He wears a concho belt of rectangular cuts of Sleeping Beauty turquoise & below his feet is a HUGE chunk of premium Blue Diamond Turquoise that sits in a serrated bezel that Philander cut himself & the stone has all the characteristics known to this particular turquoise, like the blocky type smokey gray-black matrix & the black chert.Philander was telling me that when he bought the rock it was 52 carats & now it's around 45 carats from having to have shaved the back a bit, so it lays right in it's housing. It is so 'signature' Blue Diamond! The tips have 18K tips on the bottom.
Whether your a Texas oilman,Tuscon banker,Santa Fe gallery owner or just love wearing top notch bolos, this isn't one to be passed up! Perfect choice to wear at Santa Fe Indian Market too!
You can never go wrong with anything Philander makes & anything of his holds it's weight in value, since he ishighly collectible. His pieces are works of art that can be cherished a lifetime.
